As a young man, I joined the air force
to serve our country. I was fortunate enough to have
excelled in my studies in electrical and computer
repair, so I was placed back in my home town up on a
mountain top as a reward for my efforts. I was a
Computer technician working on a huge 28-foot dish
radar. I was the man that kept the computer operating
correctly, so the missiles fired from submarines found
their targets in the sky and did not hit us. Luckily, I
never had to witness a real live war.
After my term was over in the Air Force, I needed a
new occupation. Finding work was very difficult in the
70’s. Companies were not hiring anyone to maintain the
ancient computer equipment the Air Force trained me to
repair. Therefore, I had a friend who worked in the
shipyards here in San Diego, Ca. as an electrician. He
told me to go down and take their test. Therefore, I
tried the test. I passed, and soon found myself
repairing, installing, testing and removing all sorts of
electrical and electronic equipment on NAVY ships and
Commercial vessels.
For eight years, I gave the job my best effort and
learned so much about electrical control work and radar
controls. I had a family of four by this time and moving
from town to town was no picnic just to stay working. Up
and down the coast, looking for work was very hard. My
children had to change schools many times. Finally, I
had enough of the rat race and moved to RENO NV. I spent
a week looking for work. I was inland so shipyards were
out of the question. I worked on day jobs that paid
peanuts, so I had to learn very quickly how to live very
cheaply. I was earning a very poor wage so living within
my means was necessary. I had two kids and a wife to
take care of. When you’re forced into a particular
situation, you learn to sink or swim!
I spent a month or so working as a laborer on
construction sites just to feed us! Any job I could find
I would do to get us fed. I learned how to live on bare
minimum. Trust me you never want to be in that situation
if you can avoid it! I began to find cheap products and
services for everything we did! I had to make very
little money stretch! I discovered fantastic deals for
cheap prices when I really looked. My wife was amazed at
the things I came home with. Sometimes in order to eat
we had to go to the local church to get a meal.
At Christmas time, I would cut down mistletoe from
trees and the family would bag little pieces and tie a
ribbon around the bags. Out to the stores my son in his
Boy Scout suit and my daughter in her Girl Scout suit
selling bags of mistletoe to passerbies. This was the
ONLY way we could have a Christmas for the kids! We did
donate half of the money to the church! It was sad times
in our lives but it did bring us closer together. We
found a life of living cheap taught us to appreciate our
lives today!
I still, to this day, have not stopped looking for
ways to make our lives have meaning. Buying new products
is not always satisfying. Have you ever had buyer’s
remorse? That horrible feeling in the pit of your
stomach telling you, you were ripped off! You were
probably talked into a product by a salesperson that was
much overpriced and you knew it! You find yourself
telling yourself lies like ”I got a great deal”! Then
you tell your friends and family! Everyone to your face
agrees with you but as soon as you take off, trust me,
those people are taking about how you got taken! We have
all experienced this feeling. We all want to keep up
with the Joneses.
One thing I discovered is … who really cares about
what I do. Who really cares what I drive. It only
matters what I think! Are you happy with the car you
drive? Can you get from A to Z? Is the purchase price
and payments putting you into the poor house? I
personally gave up an F-150 Truck loaded, for a Ford
Focus. Why? To be able to purchase the HOME I live in
now! The truck payment was way out there! I found a deal
on my home financing and in two years, I made $100,000
in equity. WOW!
So it was the truck, toys OR a home? What do I do?
Now can you see that the right choices in life may not
be happy in the beginning but for the most part things
work out for the best! I could take out a second on my
house and buy another truck if I want CASH! No payments
at all! My home would pay for it!........ No, I have not
